merry christmas

Hi,
When I think that it was only a year ago that I made my first web page I am amazed. Since then I have added 35 pages, not counting the recipes.
My son John gave me Paint Shop Pro for my birthday this past year so now I am making my own backgrounds. Yes, this is one I made.
Last year I included "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause" in my page. This year I am using an item from an email I received. In this time of so many global troubles I feel this is especially appropriate.
I'll get you a cup of tea while you read the story.

GI Christmas

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE
AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."

Here is your tea.
Much has happened this past year, Miss Merna passed on last April. This was a hard time for me as I had been with her for almost 6 years. I felt like I lost a member of my family. Anyway, Miss M. is now with her husband where she had wanted to be for a long time. I took several months off from working. It is the first time I had done that since 1956. I have really enjoyed being able to stay at home. But it has been long enough, I am ready to go back to work.

I have made so many friends on this thing we call the "net". If you had told me a few years ago some of my best friends would be people I would never meet, I would have told you that you were out of your ever lovin' mind. However, it has worked out that way. I have been lucky enough to be able to meet in real life some of the people I had met on the net.

Our initial meetings were in a public place where the risk is less. This is always a chancey thing to do. Please NEVER meet anyone for the first time in a lounge or bar. Pick a resteraunt or coffee shop.

GrandmaBear, MommyMo and CraftyLady, I really enjoyed meeting you. You are all as nice in person as you seemed on the "net". There are many more I wish I could meet. Maybe some day.

I hope your past year has been all you wanted. My wish for the next year? Of course the usual peace, health etc.. But over and above that I hope that the new century is as exciting as the last one. Merry Christmas my friend, and please be safe.
